Urban Climbing Manifesto

Philadelphia’s underground urban climbing guide

Kelly Drive

Matt Tarosky

Location: Take Kelly Drive north until you go under Girard Ave, pull your car off immediately before Brewery Hill Dr. (But that’s only for you monsters that don’t ride bikes or are attempting to save the planet.)

Rock: Steep mica, granite base of Girard Ave and sandstone train-track base

Type of climb: Bouldering, bring footsie carpet

Description: The most popular outdoor bouldering spot in Center City. The obvious chalk marks list the amount of possibilities on the overhung section of mica. The granite bridge base directly south 150’ holds a dozen stiffer face problems that are easier on the hands. If you walk north via the path from the Mica wall, the train-track base holds a half-dozen face problems on dirty sandstone.

Set Routes:
-”Mica Rainbow Traverse” V0+ (Start left or right, traversing up, over and back down opposite side)
-”Baseboard Traverse” V2 (Start on positive left base of bridge, traverse right on small granite crimps)
