Urban Climbing Manifesto

Philadelphia’s underground urban climbing guide

UPenn Railroad Tiers

Gant Miller

Location: Between South and Locust (Park behind UPenn football field and cross footbridge to baseball fields, you will walk underneath the Railroad Tiers before you reach the fields)

Rock: Tier constructed with collected rock from Planet Telex

Type of Climb: Bouldering and Urban Leading

Description: Bouldering over maintained grassyness. But bring your ropes and anchor lead gear off iron bars. Fat-security-dupe will peak around the corner soon after your partner has begun to second and clean gear. At this point every member of the party is obligated to stay still and make no noise. Once he’s gone, continue climbing as usual.

Matt Tarosky

Peter Parker

Set Routes:
-”Cross Town Traffic” 5.9 urban lead (On the southern side of the support directly across from the baseball field, begin climbing left corner of support. Climb unprotected 30’ and girth-hitch iron bars. Ascend to iron tracks and climb inverted out on bridge I-beams, hitching for protection. Belay station is built 35’ out. Have your partner clean gear, smoke, then rappel from fixed station. FFA Peter Parker/Matt Murdock, Dec ‘04)
